GOLD: AB EX NY iPad App
Museum of Modern Art, New York and Deep Focus
Judges said: Lightweight mobile devices are being quickly adopted by museums as a means to engage with physical and virtual visitors. Offered for free, MoMA’s iPad app both extends the exhibition experience and brings the exhibition to visitors who never make it to the gallery. While the iPad technology is still relatively new, the app also takes elements from other tried-and-true technologies and bundles them up into a comprehensive package of tools for the visitor. Multimedia, mapping, and even a glossary of art terms are used to present AbstractExpressionist New York via various access points. The design is intuitive, appealing, and in keeping with MoMA’s digital look-and-feel; both the design and content offerings integrate seamlessly with the institution’s web site. We love the fact that the images of artworks are presented in relative scale, a simple yet effective device. The bookmarking feature, e-card service, and Twitter sharing within the app enable the user to curate and share their experience. E-commerce, course offerings, and membership opportunities available online via the app are not only useful for the visitor but also cleverly create an extended audience development opportunity for the institution.
Producers said: MoMA’s first iPad app features the major 2010-2011 exhibition Abstract Expressionist New York. The free Ab Ex NY iPad App highlights high-resolution images of selected Abstract Expressionist works, as well as a multimedia map of studios, galleries, bars, and other points of interest related to the artists. In-depth videos on key works of art, a glossary of art terms and art term videos are also included, as well as the ability to read about the exhibition and exhibition publication, share your favorite works on Twitter, and more.
